The future
does not exist but it is the only certainty we know. We rush toward it but never reach it, we move
into it but never meet it, we talk about it but never experience it, we
relate to it by things that have happened in the past, a dimension that no
longer exists. For the only thing that is real is the present; that fleeting
bite of past, future and now that has us in its grasp for an instant and then
lets us go.
In matters
relating to the future and the past most of us fret and worry, we dwell on both
continuously even though we cannot change
one and the other does not yet exist. The present slips by as if it does not
exist, yet it is the only real reality.
When you are
in infatuated with someone you will hang off their every word, every action
every meaning, you are happy.
When you are
absorbed by some project for example writing a book, painting a picture,
playing with a child, fly fishing for trout, your absorption holds you in the
present and you are happy.
When on a
mission or cause the striving for an outcome or goal removes those fears and doubts
that often plague us. All is suspended until we reach the goal and we are
transformed into that happiest of people. That other time is when you are very
still and “you capture the moment”
and things become clear to you and your soul flies into the far outer reaches
of consciousness.
As the
Buddha puts it-“The secret of health for
both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future,
or not to anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and
earnestly.” ~ Buddha
