Game of Thrones or Why Sex, Sadism and Barbarity?

Why is Game of Thrones (GoT)so popular in the Western World?   Sure the production values and story line are very good. The acting solid, the costumes fantastic,  scenery and photography first class, but this goes for a lot of shows.  GoT is a phenomenen larger than life.

GoT shows and flaunt all those traits and behaviours we have long strived to eradicate or control in our proggressive democatic politically correct modern world.Things such as:

Sexism, Subjugation of Women, Glorification of War, Barbarity, Chauvinism, Class Segregation, Priviledge, Religious Fanaticism, Pornography, Discrimination, Sorcery, Witchcraft, Magic, Gratuitous Violence, Sadism, Primogeniture, Exploitation, Child Cruelty, Corruption, and so on.  In fact just about every type of regressive and deviant  behaviour known to man.

Is it because in our modern world we are so politically correct that all adventure, passion, difference, and innovation in social discourse and public life has been so controlled and abbreviated  that we have  become a grey featureless landscape of clones. Are we scared of our uniqueness, afraid of our differences, devoid of passion, and starved of experience?

Is this why we travel into the fantasy worlds as illustrated by GoT and other just as fantastical productions of late? Are we trying to escape the blandness and frightening conformity of our time?  Or is it just an indication of our time? Maybe it is a bit of both?

Whatever it is; it does not hurt us as individuals to ponder on it and wonder at the scope and imagination of the human condition and our place in it.
