The greatest disability...

The greatest disability is not imposed by nature or chance , but by the self within.

Shine on Awards –Kristen Dennis

One of the hats I wear is as a Rotarian at the local Rotary Club in Kyneton. They are a great bunch of people and we have fun and have it while doing projects and benefit's for our community.
Recently I was involved with another member Graeme Batrouney in organising a member of our community to be awarded a Shine on Recognition.
I must say that it was one of the most moving things I have ever done.  The modesty and humble attitude of these people who had done extraordinary things sometimes under extreme difficulty was inspiring.
Their stories were remarkable.

Personally it made me realise how much I take for granted and how much more I could do if I wanted to be a real community minded person. Often I am disabled from within: Negative thoughts, actions and prejudices get in the way.
From my press release to the local media- In a moving and meaningful ceremony outstanding community members with disabilities were awarded Shine on Awards by Nicola Roxon Attorney General and Emergencies minister at the Yarraville RSL Club (Hosted by the Rotary Club of Yarraville).

Awardees are people who have shown an active involvement in community service for the benefit of others and to have achieved at a significant level, whilst managing a specific medical or disability.

The Rotary Club of Kyneton nominated:

 Ms Kristen Dennis

From:
Castlemaine   3450

Kristen has worked in Kyneton and Castlemaine Copy Centre (projects of Windarring) for over ten years. She has been a very reliable worker and is now a leading hand. She has attained independent living status living by herself in Castlemaine. She helps her grandmother, has attained her license and helps out on a horse riding ranch.

Kristen was awarded her Certificate of commendation by Nicola Roxon Federal Minister and Attorney General and District Govenor 9800 Dennis Shore.  John Condliffe Rotary club of Kyneton was her mentor and escort for the day.

The Award ceremony was a very humbling experience for those privileged to attend and witness the many achievements and projects the awardees were involved in despite the hurdles they had to overcome.

The awardees seemed to benefit and be very excited about the recognition and Awards. Kristen certainly was.

A very useful and worthwhile project for the Rotary Club of Kyneton to be involved in.

These people stand out in the crowd! But not because of their disability but inspite of it!
